STORIES OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN IN SCIENCE
DURING THE FULL-SCALE RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR

The НАУКОВИЦІ (eng. WOMEN IN SCIENCE) project consists of twelve stories and two documentaries about Ukrainian female scientists during the full-scale Russia-Ukraine war. Despite the war, the heroines of the project continue their work. They explore the world, help girls find their way in STEM, and study fields of science that may be useful in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. In stories and videos, female scientists talk about how their work affects people's lives and why science in Ukraine is timely and needs support.

The goal of the project is to make female scientists visible to society, show the importance of science in wartime, and inspire girls and women to build careers in STEM specialties.

Kateryna Shavanova

biologist

Head of the R&D projects in the field of crop production at the Ukrainian agricultural company «Kernel». Kateryna's work will make it possible to use the assets of world science for the needs of agriculture more effectively, in particular, to find ways to restore Ukrainian soils after hostilities and return yields to pre-war levels.

Olena Pareniuk

radiobiologist

Senior researcher of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Olena studies the impact of radiation on bacteria in polluted areas — Chornobyl and Fukushima exclusion zones. Her research helps to study how ecosystems interact with unexpected contamination.
