Topic Design Thinking: Empowering Innovators and Scientists of Tomorrow
Description In this session, we will explore the value of human centered innovation for scientists, innovators and change makers. The challenges of the 21st century are becoming more complex and interdisciplinary. Whether you're a seasoned scientist, an aspiring entrepreneur, or a curious young innovator, as a community, our ways of solving those challenges need to remain generative too. By leveraging the best and the latest technology and research, we need to ensure our ideas and solutions are developed mindfully, ethically and sustainably, designed with and not just for. Design thinking as a mindset, tool and skillset can help us with figuring our the how without loosing sight of the why.

She was previously an Imperial College Research Fellow in SPIN-Lab at Imperial, which is led by Professor Sandrine Heutz. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Fuchter and Campbell groups at Imperial College London, where she optimised these chiral systems such that can absorb/emit circularly polarised (CP) light for CP OLEDs and OPDs. For her PhD Jess concentrated on organic photovoltaics and the development of advanced characterisation techniques to better understand molecular packing under the supervision of Dr Ji-Seon Kim.
Jess is involved with several science communication and outreach initiatives. She is committed to improving diversity in science, both online and offline, and since the start of 2018 has written the Wikipedia biographies of women and people of colour scientists every single day. Wade has made a large contribution to a Wikipedia campaign that encourages the creation of Wikipedia articles about notable female academics, in order to promote female role models in STEM. Wade has created new Wikipedia biographical articles to raise the profile of minorities in STEM. As of February 2024, she had written over 2,100 biographies on Wikipedia.
